The AKiTiO Node is One of the Most Affordable External GPU Enclosures on the Market!
There’s the US$499 Razer Core and S$888 ASUS ROG XG Station 2. And then there’s the AKiTiO Node, which costs US$298 (~S$422), just about half the price of its rivals.
This big black box lets you drop in almost every Graphics Card on the Market. It measures 428 x 145 x 227mm, and can take full-height cards up to 312mm long. A 400 watt power supply powers the GPU which should be more than enough for most cards, but you can choose to replace it with a higher wattage unit if you wish.
External graphics enclosures are nifty ways to improve gaming performance on your laptop, but they can take quite a hefty toll on your wallet. It also doesn’t help that these docks generally don’t come with the GPU, which means the total expense is often a lot higher.
Given the price, there aren’t any fancy bells and whistles. You'll not get any extras like USB 3.0 or Gigabit Ethernet ports, so this is purely a GPU enclosure.
The Node uses a Thunderbolt 3 interface, so it will work most Windows 10 notebooks that support the standard and the use of external graphics cards through the BIOS, which is good news for accessibility.
In light of this, the AKiTiO Node is a welcome entry to the market, given how affordable it is relative to the competition. Ultimately, the AKiTiO Node is reasonable and a relatively affordable way to get real graphics performance in a Thunderbolt 3 equipped laptop! Furthermore, with Apple's roll out on High Sierra, MacBooks now have official support for eGPUs!
